Our study of the political, economic, legal and socio-cultural environment of port logistics at the Port of Douala has enabled us to draw a number of telling observations: - Competition is very fierce amongst the various stevedores; - Service quality does not always translate into a competitive advantage; - Corruption is rife but remains a taboo subject; - Local preference is encouraged; - There are very few barriers to entry or exit from the profession, which has led to a proliferation of stevedores; - Operations at the Port of Kribi are due to commence shortly. All these constraints are leading major multinationals to sell, offer and promote synergies between their various activities in order to provide customers with the most comprehensive service possible - a single solution covering their end-to-end logistics chain. It is against this backdrop that Maersk Cameroon has chosen to split its various divisions into autonomous and independent entities, operating in a fragmented manner despite the numerous advantages that group-wide synergies could offer through Maersk Line's dominant position.
