Some prayers are whispered by a child and answered by God decades later.

Alan Ferguson never had much. No parents. No family name. No place to call his own. But from the time he was old enough to feel the ache of it, he had one consuming desire ... to find the family he believed, with everything in him, had to exist somewhere in the world. That desire was not ambition. It was not stubbornness. It was faith in its purest, most unformed shape; the kind only a child's heart can carry without breaking under the weight of it.

At ten years old, Al ran away from the only home he'd ever known, The Chiricahua Children's Home, with nothing but a small supply of food, water, and that singular, unshakeable hope. When his provisions ran out, he found himself lingering near a small community called Amory, where a kind couple took him in and offered him shelter, warmth, and a temporary sense of belonging. It was more than he'd had before. But it wasn't what his heart was looking for.

Then he met Robert Barlow.

There are friendships that develop over time, and there are bonds that simply are ... immediate, unexplainable, and unbreakable. What Al and Barlow had was the latter. So drawn was Al to his new friend that he left the comfort of his temporary home across town and took up shelter beneath a railroad trestle just to be near him. The town's children mocked him for it, giving him the name that would follow him for the rest of his life; Trestle Rat. But two people never joined in that cruelty: Robert Barlow, and a girl named Michelle Peterson, whom Al would carry quietly in his heart for years to come.

Life, as it does, pulled them in different directions. Michelle's father forbade their relationship. Time and circumstance built walls between them. But God, it turns out, had been building something else entirely, something neither man could see from where they stood.

Twenty-eight years later, just as Barlow steps into the calling God had placed on his life, the truth is finally revealed. The miracle Al had prayed for as a little boy, the family he knew was out there, had been walking beside him all along.

Trestle Rat is the powerful conclusion to The Barlow Trilogy, a quiet testament to the faithfulness of God, the mystery of calling, and the extraordinary lengths to which divine providence will go to answer the prayer of a child who never stopped believing, even when he didn't yet have the words for faith.
