For over 100 years mules have been carrying tourists down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. This is the story of one of those mules. Twinkie, a handsome red mule, was born on Mr. Bob's Mule Ranch where he begins his early training to prepare him to be a Grand Canyon Mule. This is the dream of all mules born at the ranch. Twinkie, along with his friend Hopi, encounter many different people and animals as they make their way across the United States from Tennessee. Once they arrive at the Grand Canyon in Arizona they begin their training in earnest in order to beat the coming winter snows. Many new sites and sounds await them on the trail down into the canyon, and unforeseen danger catches up with them before they reach Phantom Ranch at trail's end.
