S'inscrivant résolument dans l'ère postmoderne, ce roman utilise le prétexte d'un attentat pour questionner les thèmes du vide, de l'absence, de l'adoption et du flou identitaire.Dans un café universitaire, une bombe explose, tuant parmi les victimes un jeune homme de 18 ans venu s'inscrire à l'université. Son corps, ou plutôt les morceaux qu'il en reste sont transmis à ses parents dans une urne que la mère gardera précieusement chez elle pendant quinze ans. Accompagnant l'urne, un enfant de 3 ans – aussi présent dans le café au moment de l'explosion mais épargné par la bombe car caché dans un "espace vide" (khālī jagah) – est adopté par les parents du disparu, recevant en quelque sorte le rôle de substitut du fils perdu. C'est cet enfant, devenu adulte, qui est le narrateur de l'histoire. Le "nouveau-venu" ne réussira à se créer une identité propre dans cet espace familial qu'au prix d'une longue "gestation silencieuse" et grâce à l'arrivée d'une mystérieuse jeune femme, principale destinataire et témoin du narrateur.
