What Doesn't Live Here

Not every empty house is truly empty.

Mara Holt sells the houses nobody wants: bank-owned, stripped for copper, beige as the Inland Empire sky. Two years ago she was selling glass houses in the Bird Streets to tech money, with twenty-four thousand people watching her do it. Now she wears the Target jeans and the old Nikes, keeps a notebook of rules she calls the Framework, and holds a small, careful life together one showing at a time.

Then she opens the door at 2847 Fox Ridge Court. A man sits zip-tied to a kitchen chair, days dead, tortured for something he never gave up. Behind the cut drywall, Mara finds it: twelve words on a piece of paper. A seed phrase. Nearly fifteen million dollars that belongs, now, to whoever holds the words.

Mara runs.

Behind her comes Sheriff Linda Crews, twenty-five years married, three years into a job that has made her witness to everything the valley does to people, with a marriage coming apart and a deputy in intensive care. And behind them both comes Derek Caine, the man you send when money needs collecting: patient, exact, a killer who trusts nothing but arithmetic and has never been wrong about what a person will do. He has a file on Mara. He knows what she wants. He is counting on it.

What Doesn't Live Here is a literary crime novel from the edge of the Mojave, told in the voices of the woman running, the woman chasing, and the man who intends to be the last one standing. It is a book about foreclosed subdivisions named for animals that never lived there, about money that belongs to whoever is left, about hunger that answers hunger, and about how far a woman will run before she turns around and looks at what she is carrying.

For readers of Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men, S. A. Cosby, and Don Winslow.
