Cora Quade has spent her life photographing the dead.
At her family's funeral home in Stillhouse County, she knows how to make grief look peaceful. When the coroner needs help, she also photographs crime scenes, overdoses, accidents, and the bodies the county would rather process quickly and forget.
Then Ansel Greave is found dead beneath the River Road Bridge after a freezing night. Everyone calls it tragic. Everyone calls it expected. Everyone wants to move on.
But Cora's camera catches something impossible.
In the photograph, Ansel is standing behind his own body, pointing toward the people who passed him by.
At first, the images reveal what the dead refused to confess. Abuse. Affairs. Addiction. Hidden violence. Old shame. Then Cora photographs someone still alive and sees her already dead in the background.
Someone in Stillhouse County is turning buried sins into staged deaths. The town wants to blame the camera, the dead, or the devil.
Cora knows the truth is worse.
The dead are not killing anyone.
They are remembering.
