Fire in the Hill Country: The Forgotten War for Palestine, 1831-1841

In the spring of 1834, a sheikh in the hills above Nablus made a choice he had spent years trying to avoid. Qasim al-Ahmad had watched Egypt's armies sweep across Palestine, had watched a three-century-old world of olive terraces and negotiated custom buckle under conscription, disarmament, and taxes no sultan had ever dared impose — and now his own people were done waiting for him to act. What followed was one of the most dramatic and least-known uprisings of the nineteenth-century Middle East: a peasant revolt that briefly seized Jerusalem, humiliated an army that had already broken the Ottoman Empire twice, and forced the great powers of Europe to intervene. The Hills Rise Up traces this forgotten war from Muhammad Ali's ruthless rise in Egypt through the siege of Acre, the fall of Damascus, and the battlefield triumphs that nearly toppled Istanbul itself — before turning to the revolt's brutal suppression and its stranger, sadder legacy: how the crushing of one man's rebellion cleared the ground for the very bureaucratic order he died resisting. Rich with betrayal, siege warfare, and the quiet tragedy of a vanishing world, this is narrative history that reads like a reckoning.
