How do I grieve a father you never truly had?  When Loubaby dies suddenly of a massive heart attack, his estranged son expects to feel almost nothing.  Instead, the death tears open a lifetime of broken promises, missed visits, and unanswered questions.  At the funeral, the son discovers that the man who abandoned him became a devoted father and grandfather to another family.  Everyone remembers Loubaby as loyal, generous, funny, and present.  His biological son remembers waiting at a window for a man who never came.  That night, grief becomes a courtroom.  Loubaby is placed on trial for abandonment, and the son finally gets to ask every question death left unanswered.  But as witnesses testify and Loubaby's history is exposed, the Judge turns toward the accuser.  The son must confront the unbearable truth that, despite vowing to be different, he also left his own children carrying absence.  Loubaby is a deeply moving literary novel about Black fatherhood, inherited wounds, shame, accountability, forgiveness, and the difficult work of breaking a generational cycle.  It refuses an easy acquittal and a fairy tai reunion.  Instead, it asks whether a guilty father can be understood without being excused and whether a wounded son can return before regret becomes his final inheritance.
