The story takes place in the near future of humanity in the state of Metropolis. Oytosh Avery struggles to survive under harsh conditions: food shortages, poor working conditions, and the denial of basic rights as a second-class citizen (one deemed to have no talents). Meanwhile, the teenager Sati Lalliman tries to help Oytosh as much as she can, despite being forbidden from doing so as a first-class citizen (one who enjoys all the privileges of civilization: excellent education, superior healthcare, and ample food). The two live together in secret, constantly fearing discovery. Things remain manageable until the security forces discover them and separate them. However, they both try to reach each other, defying all odds. The author relies heavily on intuition, feelings, and premonitions in her writing. Perhaps this is why her books seem to predict the future. For example, this book describes a virus that selectively affects certain segments of the population, much like the coronavirus.
