Operations, Not Content

At Hearth & Hands, compassion has good lighting. The photographs are warm, the speeches carefully timed, and every success arrives with a number attached. Emma is new enough to believe the numbers. Then she notices what remains outside the frame: a woman arranged beneath a ring light, a dangerous strip of loose floor tape, a worker repairing equipment no donor will ever see.As Emma begins questioning how the organization measures its work, she is drawn toward James, Lila, and others who have learned that care survives through unglamorous acts—tightening a wheel, recording a failure, paying an invoice on time, allowing someone to refuse.Their attempt to build a different way of working begins quietly. It does not stay quiet.Operations, Not Content is a sharply observed novel about the distance between appearing useful and being useful, and about the people who keep doing the work after the cameras have turned away.
