Watercolor

Carter Hale drifts through life one drink, one cigarette, and one unfinished painting at a time. Talented but directionless, he spends his days balancing artistic ambition against addiction, self-destruction, and the quiet belief that he may already be too far gone to change. While his younger brother Cameron appears to embody stability—a career, a wife, a daughter, a home—cracks beneath the surface reveal that everyone around Carter is carrying burdens of their own. When a last-minute crisis at a local art gallery unexpectedly places Carter's work in the spotlight, he is forced into proximity with the very things he has spent years avoiding: responsibility, vulnerability, and the possibility that his art might actually matter. As old wounds resurface and relationships deepen in complicated ways, Carter finds himself pulled between the comfort of self-sabotage and the terrifying uncertainty of hope.Centered on family, addiction, love, and the invisible weight people carry behind ordinary conversations, Watercolor is an intimate literary novel about flawed people trying—often unsuccessfully—to hold themselves and one another together. Through quiet domestic moments, strained relationships, and deeply human imperfections, the novel explores how healing rarely arrives all at once, but instead in small acts of grace, connection, and survival.
